Group Summary:

Objectives: To conduct research and system development aimed at improving our understanding and forecast capacity of mesoscale weather systems.

Research Activities:

The Group is active in mesoscale research and system development, with significant collaboration with scientists from national and international organisations. Activities focus upon: Observational research and development; Nowcasting research and development; Tropical Cyclone research and development; and Air-sea interaction and coastal meteorology research.

Major developments during the year included the establishment of the Nowcasting program, with an initial concentration on quantitative radar applications. This program will include participation in the World Weather Research Programme (WWRP) Nowcasting Demonstration Project for the Sydney 2000 Olympics. Research continued under the Tropical Cyclone program; the Maritime Continent Thunderstorm Experiment (MCTEX); ground validation activities associated with the first year of the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) at Darwin and as part of the South China Sea Monsoon Experiment (SCSMEX); set-up and commencement of the Japan-Australia Tropical Mesoscale Experiment (JATMEX) in the Darwin area; the continued development of the autonomous Aerosonde with demonstrations of operational trails and flight records; and the start of a joint Doppler wind profiler development.
