Interests & Research:

As Marine Prediction Leader, I am responsible for leading and conducting research related to marine prediction for the Australian region. Marine prediction research at BMRC currently encompasses three major areas: coastal systems, wave modelling and air-sea interaction.
  • Coastal systems include storm-surges and tsunamis. The tsunami research being undertaken in BMRC is contributing to the development of the Australian Tsunami Warning System. In particular, we are developing the capacity to provide real-time forecasts of tsunamis using numerical models and available sea-level observations.
  • Wave modelling research currently includes further development of the data assimilation system, wave modelling for shallow water regions and application of the Optimal Consensus Forecast (OCF) system to wave forecasts.
  • Air-sea interaction work includes evaluation and enhancement of the surface fluxes from the Bureau's Numerical Weather Prediction systems. In particular, we are examining parameterisations of sea-surface roughness in order to develop a two-way coupled wave-atmosphere system.
