These images (courtesy of CSIRO Marine Research) are measurements of sea-surface temperature from infrared sensors aboard NOAA satellites. Unfortunately, no images were available during the time period of the race due to cloud cover over the region. However, these images suggest that during the race, there was a large anti-cyclonic eddy centred at about (152E 36.5S). At the southern boundary of this eddy (just north of Gabo Island) was a strong eastward-flowing current with possible speeds of up to 2m/s (4 knots) (G. Cresswell, personal communication).
