We now consider the wave conditions of the area surrounding the race region. These figures show the Significant Wave Height (SWH) field at 11am on Dec. 26th, a few hours before the start of the race, and the SWH field 12 hours later. A region of very high SWH has developed in the Tasman Sea, caused by strong winds associated with a low pressure system in this area. The white arrows represent the mean wave direction. Over the next few days, the peak SWH moves southward, while the mean wave direction turns towards the south-west. Although the peak SWH remains some distance away from the race region, this storm still has a significant influence over the sea-state near the Australian coast, and the wave directions indicate that during the period of the yacht race, swell arising from this storm propagates towards the Australian coast and into the race region.
