OCEAN AND MARINE FORECASTING HOME OCEAN AND MARINE FORECASTING STAFF OCEAN AND MARINE FORECASTING EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS OCEAN AND MARINE FORECASTING COLLABORATIONS OCEAN AND MARINE FORECASTING ANNUAL REPORT

The 1998 Sydney-to Hobart yacht race was the most disastrous event in the race's history. The fleet met a severe storm off the coast of southern NSW which caused the death of 6 people. Only 44 of the initial 115 yachts departing Sydney Harbour arrived in Hobart.

This figure shows the bathymetry of the region, i.e., the water depth. Note that most of Bass Strait (between mainland Australia and Tasmania) is less than 80m deep, indicating that shallow water effects may be important in this region.

The white line shows the track taken by one of the yachts that completed the race. It can be seen that after reaching Gabo Island, the boat was subsequently blown off course by the storm. The Kingfish B Oil Platform (KFB) is also shown here - some surface marine observations were available at this location.
