Statistics from the MOM1 Assimilation Run

These are results from the BMRC MOM1 (ACOM I) data assimilation run from 1980 through to 1998 (Wang et al 2001). The analysis technique is described in Smith (1991).

For MOM1, a "uarch" file was created at each analysis step (10 days apart) that contained full configuration details, the model state before analysis (just T), the estimated error of that first guess, the analysis, and the estimated analysis error. Also, all original observations and formed super-obs are written out with information on the fate of those observations in the analysis.

For the 693 analyses performed from Jan 1980 through to end of 1998, the following are calculated:

• The mean analysis increment (analysis - forecasts) superposed on the mean temperature at the equator, 165E and 140W;
• Mean analysis increment superposed on the mean temperature for z=0, 50, 250 and averaged over 0:300 m;
• For the domain 5S - 5N and 120E - 90W, at z=100 m
  • The mean estimated error
  • A count of the number of effective observations
  • The mean bias (observed value minus forecast)
  • The  rms observed minus forecast
  • The mean bias (observed value minus analysis)
  • The  rms observed minus analysis
• As above, but for the domain 20S - 20N
• Repeated as above but for 200 m instead of 100 m
