Data Management

• JAFOOS is assembling its own data archive, covering the ocean basins of importance to Australia. In addition to this, JAFOOS will draw on the extensive marine and climate data archives of CSIRO and the Bureau of Meteorology.

  • The CSIRO Marine Research Data Centre manages and is responsible for one of the nation's most extensive marine data archives. Through the CSIRO Marine Laboratories Information Network, MARLIN, you can search their directory of available datasets.
  • The Bureau of Meteorology's National Operations Branch (which includes the National Meteorological & Oceanographic Centre (NMOC) and National Climate Centre (NCC)) manage the nation's largest climate and surface marine data archives.

• JAFOOS operates the GTSPP Indian Ocean Upper Ocean Thermal (UOT) Data Assembly Centre. This centre was intially established as a part of WOCE and now continues to operate under CLIVAR. The Centre's objective is to assemble the most comprehensive UOT data set available for the Indian Ocean over the WOCE period (1990-98) and beyond. Its responsibility is to apply scientific quality control (QC) and analyse the data according to common procedures implemented by the three regional ocean centres (Indian/JAFOOS, Pacific/SIO and Atlantic/AOML). • JAFOOS is responsible for developing and maintaining data management tools and procedures, such as the CSIRO/BMRC Quality Evaluation of Subsurface Temperatures (QUEST) software system. This program is currently being redeveloped using Java and netCDF to be platform independent. It will then be made available for use by other organisations.
