9 January 2002:  Rainfall over cape York and Gulf Country

Gedday,

The amounts are not large, but the rainfall over Cape York and the Gulf
Country has persisted for several days now.  It seems to be diurnal
deep convection embedded in a large scale "up-slide looking" thin
altostratus.  From the charts I can find on the web, its difficult to see
whether there is any synoptic structure associated with this.  Is it
forced by the trailing front or equivalently a  surface trough line?

Any comments from those with on-the-bench experience and/or those with
detailed charts at their disposal?

Even though the grid-point statistics aren't all that impressive, the
models have been picking up the large area of rainfall and the general
quantities fairly well.

cheers
