MEDIA RELEASE - QUEENSLAND REGIONAL OFFICE

Dust storm sweeps across Queensland interior

Extensive areas of dust are moving east across the Queensland interior today behind a vigorous trough. At 10am this morning, the dust front extended from around Mount Isa down to the St George region of the State. The dust front is expected to continue to move east and affect the Central Highlands region and the south-east of the State during the afternoon and overnight.

The dust storm has caused severe reductions in visibility. This morning, Windorah and Charleville reported visibility down to 300 metres, Thargomindah reported visibility to 500 metres, and St George to 700 metres.

People are advised to consider what action to take to mitigate the impact of the dust on their health.

This rare event can be seen on weather satellite imagery available on the Bureau's website at: www.bom.gov.au/products/IDX1299.shtml
