Hi Synopticians,
Today,
as has become quite common in recent times, we have had another day
with gale force winds in the Sydney/Ilawarra region. However, today,
unlike previously, these surface gales have NOT been accompanied by
50/60
knots gradient winds.
I attach
.gif copies of the sydney and
shane
park profiler winds for this afternoon - hopefully john mcbride
can put these on his web site. Winds aloft are no more than 35/40
knots with winds at 2000ft generally
W/SW
20/25 knots.
Why then surface winds of W 35 knots gusting 41 knots or more?
For example for Sydney:

WE
generally explain similar winds on the Illawarra by mountain waves,
but
if this is what is causing it in Sydney this afternoon, I would have
expected
to see some evidence on this on the profiler. It appears as
though
all the gales are below 1000ft!
There
is a little low formong in the tasman to the east of Gabo island.
cheers
Elly
