Gedday,
As we brace ourselves for the storm of the century as forecast by GASP for this coming Saturday night (see prog on my web-page), we should not let the cold outbreak of the last couple of day's go un-remarked.
Look for example at the Hobart trace for last night (on my web-page), the 500 hPa temp is -37C. According to the statistics in my old worn copy of Maher and Lee Upper Stats Australia 1957-1975, this is 3.6 standard deviations below the long term September mean of -23.6...... Hmm, this is looking like one for Blair (if he ever ventures above the earth's surface).
I'll be back later with some comments on the progs for this coming Saturday night.
cheers
John

[synoptic_discussion] McBride's storm of the century
I see the EC is forecasting
850hPa winds from 60 to 75 knots in a band
extending southwards from
Victoria to west of Tassie.
I recall going through a
storm SW of Tassie in the good old Nella Dan when
the winds were gusting to
87 knots
