14 June 2002: The Mei-Yu front comes to Taipei

Following on from our discussion last week on the Mei-Yu front,  I  received a couple of  emails from Mong-Ming Lu of the Central Weather Bureau, Taipei, Taiwan.  She tells me Tai-pei has been suffering drought since February and has been on a 5-day rotation water rationing. Earlier this week,  the Mei-Yu front actually lay across Taiwan as per a few satellite images I have put up on my web-page.

On the first day of the event (11 June) Taipei actually received 66 mm of rain, which brought some relief; however, they have received very little since then.  I have put a couple of Mong-Ming's figures showing the warm and dry conditions on my web-page.  Mong-Ming has put together a couple of short word documents showing a few more details.  For information I suggest you email her: lu@rdc.cwb.gov.tw

The top curve shows the daily temperature from October the 1st as a deviation from the long-term mean.
The second figure shows the climatology of accumulated precipitation from Oct 1 (year -1) to June 1st (year 0), with the current year represented by the green curve, showing an accumuated deficit of the order of 800 mm.
