Convective Stratiform Technique (CST) calibrated by TRMM

The CST is an IR-based technique that utilizes both the distributions of cloud brightness temperature and texture features. In short, it identifies convective cores from IR images by searching local temperature minima and classifying them into convective and non-convective minima by examining IR structure in the neighborhood of the minima. Convective rain is assigned to each minimum identified as being convective. Stratiform rain is assigned to warmer temperatures in the cloud anvil. Both convective and stratiform rainrates are derived by calibrating with the TRMM PR.
